Cats Juggling Balls / Utagawa Kuniyoshi
“Kyoku-temari” is a traditional juggling act using balls.
A cat person, Kuniyoshi depicted cats in human shapes, inspired by a popular act by “Kikukawa Kunimaru” in Edo.In this artwork, you can see some of the “Kyoku-temari” techniques such as “Yae-zakura” which involves juggling a “mari ball”f on their bodies, and “Rangui-watari,” where the cats cross stakes while kicking a ball with their cute paws.
Ukiyo-e
Ukiyo-e is one of the traditional arts of Japan. It had a great artistic influence overseas in the late 1800s. The design will give a new face to any object that is being wrapped.
